As you get older, you may need medications to keep yourself healthy. With the changes in healthcare from the Affordable Care Act, you may be unsure of how you can get the medication you need without hassles. We have gathered some informational points about Medicare to guide you through the process.
Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage
Medicare offers prescription drug coverage to everyone that has it. There are a couple different ways that Medicare can give you the drug coverage you need.
- Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D): These plans add drug coverage to original Medicare plans that you may already have. You do not have to have other Medicare insurances to get one of these plans.
- Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C): If you have an HMO or PPO you likely have Medicare coverage. If you have Medicare hospital insurance (Part A) and Medicare medical insurance (Part B) you can join a Medicare Advantage Plan, which can offer you a deal for having more coverage with Medicare.
- Open Enrollment: October 15th to December 7th. Within this period, you can change your Medicare plan to one that includes drug coverage, or you can join a Medicare prescription Drug plan. You can also switch your drug plan to a different one or drop your drug coverage completely.
- Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period: January 1st to February 14th, this period allows you to leave your Advantage plan and switch to Original Medicare or add a prescription drug plan to your new Medicare plan.
