Ways to Fight Inflammation

Inflammation is an uncomfortable sensation that many can’t seem to escape.

Inflammation is our body’s way of telling us that something we digested is not agreeing with it. Chronic inflammation in response to diet, stress, or pollution, can be detrimental towards our bodies. Inflammation can interfere with our body’s natural process–it can block arteries, and fuel the growth of certain cancers–but certain foods can help us deal with inflammation. Here are a few ways to fight inflammation in your body.

Foods to Fight Inflammation

Omega-3 fatty acids are long chains of fatty molecules that our brain loves to use as fuel. In fact, 20 percent of our calorie intake goes directly to fuel the brain. Omega-3s can also reduce inflammation. Foods like salmon, flaxseed, walnuts, and avocados all contain the right fats your body requires.

Eat Less Meat

There are many reasons to eat more vegetables and eat less meat. Combating climate change is one, the other is to reduce inflammation. A study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that a sugar molecule found in red meat, named NEU5Gc, promotes inflammation and cancer progression.

Lose Some Weight

One of the best ways to reduce inflammation is to lose some weight. Ingest fewer calories and move around more. Fat tissue is biologically active and pumps out inflammatory chemicals. If you’re overweight, your body is in a constant state of inflammation, which only increases your risk of disease.

Probiotics Can Help

By eating probiotics and allowing good bacteria to live in your gut, you are taking a big step towards lower levels of inflammation. Healthy people have a lot of these bacteria in their gut, which keeps their digestion on point.
