What Does Medicare Part B Cover?

Learn what Medicare Part B covers for you.

At the start of the year, many people have new health insurance coverage and schedule a general check-up.  For many seniors, they consider this checkup to be an annual physical exam.  However, does your Medicare plan cover annual physicals?

Physical Exam

A physical exam is defined as studying the body to determine if there is a physical problem.  Generally, physical exams consist of a visual inspection, examining the body with fingers or hands, and listening to the body.  Medicare Part B does not cover physical exams. However it does cover comparable visits and preventive screenings.

Welcome to Medicare Visit

In the first year you are eligible for Medicare Part B, you are entitled to a “Welcome to Medicare” visit.  During this visit, your physician will talk with you to evaluate your medical and family history, current health conditions, and medications.  They may also check your blood pressure, height, and weight to establish a baseline for your care.  They will also see if you are up-to-date with immunizations and suggest preventive screenings.

Medicare Wellness Visit

After the first year of being eligible for Medicare Part B, whether or not you had your Welcome to Medicare visit, Medicare Part B covers annual Wellness Visits.  The purpose of these visits is to update your preventive health plan.  Additionally, your doctor will give you a list of suggested screenings and other preventive services you should consider.
