Medicare Covered Immunizations

Learn about Medicare Covered Immunizations and find out if your Medicare insurance plan covers them.

Medicare covered immunizations and vaccines are an important part of your health coverage, but coverage may be conditional.  The flu season is rapidly approaching, so now is the time to learn which immunizations are covered by Medicare.  Then you can decide which prescription drug plan will provide the coverage you need.

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B covers vaccines for pneumonia and the flu. It will also cover a hepatitis B vaccine if you are considered medium to high risk.  Additionally, if you have been exposed to a dangerous disease, Part B will cover other immunizations.  For example, if you are bitten by a wild raccoon, Medicare would cover your rabies shots.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are required to cover the same immunizations as Original Medicare.  If you would like to receive other vaccines, you may have to pay for them out-of-pocket.  The cost of these shots vary depending on the type of shot and who administers it. It may cost less if you get your shot at a pharmacy, instead of a doctor’s office.

Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Coverage

Generally, plans with Part D cover immunizations that Part B does not cover. Part D plans have a list of covered drugs and vaccines. However, some new preventive vaccines may not be covered. Part D covers vaccines for shingles, tetanus, and whooping cough.  Before getting a shot, check your plan to see where you can receive your vaccinations for the lowest cost.

Make sure that your plan is providing the Medicare covered immunizations you need.  We want you to stay healthy this winter. Give SeniorChoices NW a call to review your Medicare coverage and see if you need to change plans to meet your current health needs.
