How A Medicare Advantage Plan Could Serve You
You know that Original Medicare (Medicare Parts A and B) can cover many of your healthcare needs. You may also know, however, that there are some treatments and services that Original Medicare simply does not cover. Does that mean you are left to cover those costs out of your own pocket?
Fortunately, the answer is no. You have the option to enroll in a Medicare Part C plan, also known as a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by and administered through private insurance companies. They combine Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Medicare Part B (medical insurance), covering all of the services and treatments covered by Original Medicare. In addition, they often include Medicare Part D (prescription drug insurance) and may also offer coverage for health and wellness programs, as well as routine hearing, vision, and dental care.
Beyond expanded coverage, Medicare Advantage plans also offer added financial security. While Original Medicare will not cap your annual out-of-pocket expenses, Medicare Advantage plans have a maximum on your out-of-pocket costs.
You can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan when you are first eligible for Medicare, or if you qualify for a Special Election Period. You may also enroll during the annual Open Enrollment Period which begins on October 15th and ends December 7th. During these weeks, you can add, drop, or change your coverage during this time and it will be effective January of 1st of the upcoming year.
