Taking Time to Listen

Are you looking to improve your communication with your grandchild?  It all starts with active listening.

If you’ve tried to improve your communication with your grandchildren, you understand that it’s not as simple as talking more.  Communication isn’t just mindless talking and listening, it is an active attempt to connect through conversation.  While improving your communication isn’t something that you can achieve right away, a great way to start is by taking the time to listen.  Here are some things you can do to promote active listening.

Body Language

Communication isn’t just verbal; your body positioning can say a lot.  If you face away from your grandchild or don’t look at them, this can communicate distraction or disinterest in what they have to say.  Face your grandchild squarely and adopt an open posture.  This will indicate your eagerness to communicate and tell your grandchild that you are invested in what they have to say.  Additionally, if your grandchild is on the younger side, make sure you are at their level when you’re talking.  This will also show that you are interested in them.

Stay Relaxed

If you are fidgeting or seem otherwise anxious while your grandchild is talking, he or she might think you want to be elsewhere.  This in turn can cause your grandchild to stop communication for fear of inconveniencing you.

Give Feedback

Your grandchild will be watching you, so make sure you indicate that you’re still listening.  A nod or a smile of encouragement can reassure your grandchild and help them open up to you.  If you see that your child is struggling to find the right words to express themselves, don’t try to offer up suggestions.  This could distract your grandchild or make them self-conscious.  Instead, wait patiently and maintain your encouraging feedback, this will give your grandchild the confidence to remain candid.
