What To Know About Medicare Open Enrollment

It’s that time of year – Are You Ready for Medicare’s Open Annual Enrollment?

Every year, Medicare beneficiaries have a chance to change coverage during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period. The majority of Americans over 65 take advantage of Medicare to help with their healthcare costs. Although this is a beneficial service, choosing key features can be confusing and daunting.
Here are some important points to consider before you elect or change your Medicare coverage:
  • Open enrollments dates for Medicare.
Plans for 2018 will preview starting October 1, but the actual enrollment period will start on October 15 and will run through December 7. The plan you select during Open Enrollment will become effective January 1, 2018.
  • You can switch plans.
During this time you can add, drop, or switch Medicare Advantage, Prescription Drug plans, or go back to Original Medicare.
  • Part C Medicare Advantage plans may cover additional benefits, above Original Medicare.
Medicare Advantage plans may cover prescription drugs, annual physicals, routine vision, and more.
  • Add up all costs.
Be sure to look at premiums, but also take into consideration copays, coinsurance, and deductibles to understand what your total spending could be for a given year.
  • Check your medications.
Drug lists can change at any time, so make a list of the drugs you are currently taking so you can make sure the plans you are looking at cover them.
  • Review your options.
While you may be satisfied with your current plan, you need to ensure that the changes for the new year still meet your health needs . Lack of action and change in a plan can cost you.
